Description
Join us for our March Chamber Monthly Meeting to hear from Keisha Jones on "Surviving Difficult Conversations Through Effective Communication & Emotional Intelligence (Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Focused)".
Session Description: Good communication is critical to our success and happiness at work, yet communication breakdown occurs every day, especially with discussions related to diversity, equity and inclusion. Despite our best intentions, we can send the wrong message or misinterpret what some is saying. This session focuses on the 'nuts and bolts' of handling difficult conversations effectively. You will learn to have the right perspective, ask the right questions and use the right words so that difficult conversations and/or conflict becomes a productive part of building relationships, rather than something to be avoided. Emotional intelligence (EQ) will also be addressed because this provides a way to understand, assess and control emotions in this heightened situations.
Bio: Keisha Jones is an educator, trainer, speaker, and consultant who loves to see individuals and organizations thrive. She has worked in various fields over her 20+ year career but DEI work has always been at the core of the work she has done in those areas. Majority of Keisha’s professional experiences are in the realm of higher education or workforce development but she has also chaired and/or served on various non-profit boards to foster her community partnerships and relationships. In her current position at Davidson-Davie she serves as the Chief Student Services Officer but also has the opportunity to Co-Chair the Equity Steering Committee which identifies the colleges priorities related to DEI. As a part of that role she coordinates a lot of the professional development related to DEI for college employees. In addition to working at Davidson-Davie she also serves the NC Community College System as the Director of Equity for the NC Student Success Center. In this role, she provides DEI support to all 58 community colleges and oversees 40 trained Equity Coaches. The support provided includes but is not limited to training for various stakeholders, assessment of current DEI efforts, recommendation of potential frameworks, assessment of the college’s needs, and any other support the colleges may need related to this work. In her oversight of the Equity Coaches, she provides continuous professional development, framework development, and provides tools and resources that allows these coaches to serve their college DEI efforts or Keisha in her efforts. When she has free time she serves non-profits and businesses with their DEI efforts through training and consulting. To say she has a passion for this work is an understatement. Value alignment is important to Keisha and this work regardless of the arena aligns with her value system. Keisha graduated from NC A&T State University with a Master’s Degree in Human Resources and Agency Counseling, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science. She also holds numerous certifications specifically related to DEI, Emotional Intelligence, and other areas.
